The Giro delle Coste in Falcade
A pleasant walk for the whole family in Falcade
The Le Coste stroll is probably the best known easy walk in Falcade and it is suitable for families and to every guests with a bit of predisposition to hike. This suggestive itinerary winds along a picturesque forest path that connects the hamlet of Somor to Via Trieste, offering a marvellous view on Falcade and on the beautiful Dolomites peaks of the Biois Valley (Focobon, Mulaz, Cime d’Auta, Civetta).
The departure point for this walk can vary; in this page we merely propose one of the possible variants of this suggestive stroll. Starting off from the main square Piazza Municipio, reach the hamlet of Molino, then go towards the halmet of Falcade Alto along the State Road (always paying attention to traffic) or taking the many ancient original mule tracks that climb along the ridge of this part of Falcade (from Molino, you can follow Via Mas de le Mole to the graveyard, than again to Falcade Alto; as an alternative, follow the road that goes behind Hotel Belvedere and take the mule track that you will find on your left after the first left bend in the road, almost 200 meters far from the hotel).
From the little square of Falcade Alto, where you can admire some centuries-old wood barns as well as the suggestive Church of Saints Fabiano and Sebastiano) take the mule track between the houses of the hamlet (follow the signs to Rifugio Flora Alpina) for a few meters, until you meet the first crossroads, then turn on your right; walk along the paved road for a few minutes to reach the hamlet of Somor (1370 m); in this place you can admire several original wood barns; on the small square of the hamlet there is also a commemorative plaque in memory of the 11 victims of the terrible flood on November, 4th 1966, all of which were inhabitants of Somor.
From the small square, don’t take the road uphill to the hamlet of Costa but go straight on, first downhill and then along a small uphill, for almost 100 meters until you reach a small parking and a fountain. Here you’ll find a path right in front of you that leads into a beautiful wood of conifers and beech trees; follow it.
The first part of the stroll in the wood is very pleasing and panoramic; the wood is made of conifers and beeches and it is very colourful in autumn. After a small wood bridge, you’ll notice the presence of a white, huge gypsum vein on your left; in this place there are some benches ideal to admire the verdant landscape of Falcade and its peaks.
Follow the path through the hamlets of Le Coste (1285 m) and Tabiadon di Canes (1200 m), then on Via Trieste (it will take almost an hour). From here you can return to the starting point crossing the village centre or, if you want to continue your walk in the nature, on the cycle path (reach Hotel Orsa Maggiore at the end of Via Trieste, then cross the state road; the fist access to the cycle path is located at the municipal landfill, the second one at the end of the paved road at the end of the big parking): if you choose to take the cycle path, cross the Piana di Falcade until the playground and the sporting areas, then towards the main square Piazza Municipio, the starting point of our excursion.
The Giro delle Coste can be made in almost a hour and a half / two hours; except the ascent to Somor in the beginning of the tour, this walk has no particular difficulties and can be easily made by the entire family. The route is generally clean and in excellent conditions both in summer and in winter (in this season remember to wear clothing appropriate for snow and ice). The Giro delle Coste is a nice walk on a suggestive natural path which is well-equipped with signs, so it is practically impossible to get lost; if you need further information about this walk, the Falcade Tourist Office is completely at your disposal – See you there!
