Caseras, Malgas and Bivouacs | Agordino Dolomites
Under the stars in the Heart of the Dolomites
Often indispensable shelters for exploring the Heart of the Dolomites UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, bivouacs, malghe and casere are also a splendid idea for an unforgettable experience in the Pale Mountains; Agordino, the geographical center of the Dolomites, is naturally rich in structures of this type, available to visitors and mountaineers.

In this section, we offer a list of the bivouacs and casere present in the Agordino territory (Province of Belluno, Veneto Region). The list is being updated, some structures may be missing at the time of your visit. On each page, you will find the contacts of the competent Tourist Office to which you can turn for further information; our team develops the following list only for the purpose of tourist promotion of the structures in question and of the Agordino territory and does not provide official information for which we invite our readers, as always, to contact the information services responsible for this purpose.
A small glossary for the visitor: a malga is a mid or high mountain structure still used today for alpine grazing (grazing of animals at high altitude during the summer season). Malghe can have beds and offer catering services, but they can also be private buildings reserved for breeders only. In each individual entry, we have clearly indicated the purpose of each malga and the contacts of the structure or of the reference tourist office.
A casera is a mid or high mountain alpine shelter intended only for hikers; very often it was a malga that is no longer used for alpine grazing. On each page, we have indicated the equipment of the casera and the contacts of the reference tourist office for the structure.
A bivouac is a mid and high mountain structure intended for hikers; these are often structures located in places of great mountaineering relevance and managed by the CAI or by private managers, just as often they are emergency shelters located in very inaccessible places. On each page, we have indicated the contacts of the CAI headquarters / tourist office or the manager of reference.
Caseras and Bivouacs are often conceived to be only and exclusively emergency shelters and therefore it would not be possible to sleep there by appointment; the Manager of the structure should always be informed if you intend to stay overnight in the individual structure, which is why on each dedicated page you will find the contacts of the Tourist Office or directly of the Entity that manages the structure to which you can turn for further information.
IMPORTANT: the fact that these structures are public and can be used for free does not authorize anyone to disrespect the places and the volunteers who spend time, funds and effort to keep them open for everyone. Always take home the waste you produce in the mountains and leave the place where you were hosted in the same conditions in which you would like to find it. The Dolomites will thank you.
