Cascata dell’Inferno (Hell’s Waterfall)

Taibon Agordino | Agordino Dolomites

The Cascata dell’Inferno is a stunning waterfall in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Dolomites, formed by the Bordina Creek (a tributary of the Tegnas) and located in the wonderful and wild San Lucano Valley in the Municipality of Taibon Agordino, in the Province of Belluno, Veneto Region.

Cascata dell'Inferno in Taibon Agordino, UNESCO Dolomites

The uniqueness of this place and its subsequent fame stem from the spectacular environment in which the Cascata dell’Inferno is situated; located at the end of the San Lucano Valley, in a narrow gorge at the foot of the Monte Pape group, the waterfall stands out for the complex geological structures that compose it.

At this point, the water of the Bordina Creek erodes a narrow small valley and forms a very spectacular rocky amphitheater near the waterfall. Furthermore, the hydraulic action strikingly exposes the various polychromatic sedimentary layers that make up the base of Monte Pape and the nearby Pale di San Lucano, creating a truly evocative effect.

The Cascata dell’Inferno is particularly impressive in winter, when the small valley becomes enriched with the striking ice stalactites immortalized in countless photographs.

The Cascata dell’Inferno can be easily reached from the locality of Col di Prà, where there are various parking possibilities near the campsite. From here, proceed on foot following the practical CAI Trail 767 / 761 on a mule track that climbs to the Pont de la Pita (signs for Malgonera and Doff and Casera Campigat / Forcella Cesurette are clear and placed practically everywhere) and deviate from it near the appropriate markers found before reaching the Cascate di Pont.

The trail that deviates from the main path to reach the waterfall is demanding, albeit very short, and requires good familiarity with mountain trails and agility. In particular, it is wise to pay maximum attention in winter if you wish to visit the waterfall, given the presence of ice (approaching with small children and pets is not recommended). That said, the Cascata dell’Inferno is a true natural spectacle that is worth visiting if you have the chance.
