Valparola Pass (Dolomites)

Livinallongo del Col di Lana | Agordino Dolomites

Passo Valparola (also known in Ladin as Jù de Valparola or Intrà i Sass, 2192 meters above the sea level) is an Alpine mountain pass of the Dolomites UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site located in the municipal territory of Livinallongo del Col di Lana (Province of Belluno, Veneto Region). The Valparola Pass represents a natural boundary between the Agordino area (with the Valle di Fodom) and the Alto Adige – Südtirol area (with the Val Badia). Easily accessible from Passo Falzarego, Passo Valparola is a very popular destination also for guests that are staying in the nearby Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The most evident feature of the Passo Valparola is the astonishingly beautiful view on the Nothern Dolomites (that is to say the 5th of the 9 dolomitic systems officially recognized and protected by the Dolomites UNESCO Foundation) that surround this amazing mountain pass (Lagazuoi, Sass de Stria, Settsass, Nuvolau, Col di Lana just to name a few): a breathtaking landscape which is always able to surprise the visitors.

Passo Valparola is famous also for being one of the battlefields of the Great War in the Dolomites. It is located indeed along the infamous Yellow Line (the military front between the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and the Reign of Italy, that connected Marmolada to Lagazuoi) and it is still nowadays full of war finds and remains of the Great War, among which we cite here the Edelweiss Military Post (Edelweiss Stellung) and the unmissable Great War Museum in the Forte Tre Sassi, located near the Passo Valparola road on the top of the pass.

Passo Valparola is also a tactical starting point for some wondeful hikes in the area (like the Settsass Trek, to which we dedicated an article – click here) or simply an imposting setting for a nice picnic with the family or friends; in summer Passo Valparola is a popular place for guests looking for a marvelous natural context in which to relax and to enjoy the beauty of nature in the Dolomites.
