Lach dei Negher / Lech dei Giai
A wonderful alpine lake in the Heart of the Marmolada Group
The Lach dei Negher (as it is called in Val Biois) or Lech dei Giai (name of the same lake in Val Pettorina) is a marvellous and very charming mountain lake of the Dolomites UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. This splendid alpine lake is located nearby Forcella dei Negher / Forcella di Lech dei Giai at an altitude of 2205 meters in the Cime d’Auta Subgroup (Marmolada Group) in the Province of Belluno, Veneto Region.
This marvellous lake is dyed in a range of colors from emerald green to dark blue, depending on the season. It is surrounded by many imposing peaks, like the Mont Alto di Auta, Crepa Rossa and Cima Orientale d’Auta, and it offers beautiful views on Pelmo, Civetta, Antelao, Tofane, Marmolada, Pale di San Martino, Dolomiti Agordine, among the others.
On site, guests can admire both dolomite and volcanic rocks, the contrast of which contributes to create the unique chromatism of the area. Moreover, this is one of the most suitable places in the Dolomites UNESCO to admire the majestic ibexes that dwell quite undisturbed in the Marmoada area.
The Lach dei Negher / Lech dei Giai is quite easy to reach both from the Val Biois and the Val Pettorina; on the side of the Val Biois, hikers can take the CAI Path 687 from the hamlet of Feder (Canale d’Agordo) or the Alta Via dei Pastori to reach the lake in 2-3 hours. On the other side, visitors can reach the lake from the Val Pettorina from the hamlet of Sottoguda through the CAI Path 1688 and then 687 or from the hamlet of Malga Ciapela with the CAI Path 687.
