Agordino DolomitiIce climbing in the heart of the Dolomites

Ice climbing is a thrilling sport which is very popular in the Dolomites UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. In Agordino, ice climbing is practiced mainly in the Serrai di Sottoguda gorge; in winter indeed the steep walls of this natural canyon are covered with a thick layer of ice that, in the coldest months of the year (January and February) allow practicing this particular kind of climbing in relative safety. We talk about relative safety because ice climbing is a fairly dangerous sport that requires a lot of caution; if you’d like to try your hand at this sport it is always advisable to book a lesson with a professional and qualified Mountain Guide that can help you learning the basics of the correct climbing techniques and the correct use of the climbing equipment as well as the precepts of safety. On the third weekend of January, the Serrai di Sottoguda host the Serrai Ice Climbing Meeting, a huge event dedicated to the ice climbing with the participation of hundreds of climbers from all over the world; during the Ice Climbing Meeting, beginners can try this fascinating sport under the supervision of dozens of athletes and Mountain Guides. If on the other hand you’re already experienced ice climbers, the Mountain Guides of the area can take you to the most beautiful and secret spots of the Agordino where you’ll have the occasion to measure your skills.
